What is Crispy Fried Onion?

Crispy Fried Onions are a form of savoury sprinkles that are made of small pieces of onions (usually 2-5mm in length), coated in a slurry of either wheat, rice, or corn starch batter and deep fried in oil.
The resultant product is crunchy and tastes primarily of onions and slight salt.

How has fried onion been used traditionally?

Crispy Fried Onions were traditionally homemade in small fresh batches to be used as a topping on starch-based meals. Typically when prepared at home, the onions are not as crunchy as commercial varieties and also consume a lot of time in preparation and stage in terms of frying oil.

Many cultures around the world like Indian, Japanese and Thai have used crispy fried onions as a way of adding texture and extra onion flavour on top of meals like biryani. Udon noodles or Pad Thai.

How is fried onion used in modern food?

Today due to large-scale manufacturing and easy availability of crispy fried onions throughout the year, this ingredient has become a staple in many restaurant kitchens. Chefs use it as a reliable and easy way to add crunch and the aroma and flavour of onions on top of prepared meals.

Generally, the fried onions are sprinkled as the last topping on a plate of food like steaming rice, soup noodles, or stir-frys. It offers a great variation in texture against scratch-heavy meals like the softness of rice or noodles against the crispiness of fried onions.
